In this chapter, we are going to learn about the variety surrounding us and how this creates problems for some people. Also how we should avoid them and work for a better place for everyone. Difference And Prejudice. Though we live together, there several things which are different in us.OLD NCERT #POLITY #CLASS 6 #CHAPTER 1 #PrepairingforCivicLife.
Right from our way of talking, language, customs everything is diverse. The religion we follow is also different from others. This diversity sometimes creates unwanted problems. Prejudice: it means to judge others in a negative or inferior sense.
For example, we Prejudice people who speak Hindi or based on their colour or region. Sometimes or behaviour may even hurt others because of our prejudices. Creating stereotypes. Stereotyping means setting our ideas of people based on their gender, colour, region or language. Example: stereotyping that boys don't cry. People do get hurt.
Be it a boy or a girl. Crying is a form of expression of their emotions. But stereotyping that boys should not cry, hurts them and they won't be able to express their emotions in the future as well leading to disturbed individuals. Or girls are stereotyped to be sensitive and emotional beings.
So if they see a girl fighting for her rights they will stop her or pass inappropriate remarks.
Stereotyping stops us from looking at the true character of a person. Each person is different. Giving them categories and judging accordingly is stereotyping. A common stereotype that has been discussed in the book is about Muslims not educating their girls because of a lack of interest. That's not the case.
